MAT PILATES

Traditional mat Pilates was founded by Joseph Pilates in the early 1920s. Initially the slow, controlled, flowing movements were tailored towards dancers, gymnasts and athletes to strengthen the ‘core’ stabilise and support the spine and help correct postural problems - as well as promoting mental conditioning.

Originally each of the 34 mat exercises were performed together in a specific order, making sessions very intense. Today Pilates has become very popular with people of all ages and abilities. Adaptations to the traditional way of teaching has meant that the 34 exercises are achievable through modifications so everyone can do them.

If you are new to Pilates then go through the FOUNDATIONS section first to understand how to align and engage your body - it will help you to get the most out of your practice.
